Your Learning
The facilities and resources at York St John have been carefully developed to support students as they learn: your needs are at the centre of our planning processes.
Your learning will be organised into three categories:
Face-to-face with a tutor in lectures, seminars and tutorials.
Supported Open Learning (SOL) which recognises and builds upon the way in which people learn best.
Independent learning and assessment where you will work individually or in groups.
York St John aims to help you achieve your life or career aspirations, however you study with us. We welcome students who want to study with us part-time, or flexibly, and we’ll help you to explore which options are best for you.
Doing ‘modules’ – each of our qualifications is made up of ‘modules’. You can choose to study single modules in different subjects over time, or you may want to study for a qualification, such as a degree.
Learning over the web – Supported Open Learning (SOL) means you may learn at home as well on campus. Most courses have reading lists, lecture notes, and assignment details available on-line which you can access from any computer once you have registered on a course. There are also opportunities to discuss your work with other students through on-line discussion groups.
Recognising your experience – if you have experience in a work or community setting you might want to consider Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). This is where you put together a claim for ‘learning-by-doing’ which is relevant to your qualification. Staff will help you through this process to ensure it relates closely to your chosen subject.
Your Resources
Fountains Learning Centre – resources include books, journals, media materials, archives and IT. Teaching rooms are fitted out with PCs, wireless access for laptops, plus areas for group work and quiet study.
Library – stocks books, periodicals, audio-visual materials and a wide range of electronic information sources. The inter-library loan service links to other local libraries.
IT Services – once enrolled, you will be given a University e-mail address and personal secure storage space on the network. WiFi is available in some area of the campus and in student accommodation.
The David Hope RE Centre – is one of the major religious education resource centres and provides a variety of resources to individuals and groups.
Yorkshire Film Archive – the archive collects, preserves and makes accessible the moving image heritage of Yorkshire.
Phoenix Centre – led by Science City York. This facility provides affordable space with access to specialist facilities, support and training for new creative and IT-based ventures.
Health & sports facilities – include a performance area, complete with climbing wall and facilities for basketball, netball, badminton, indoor football, cricket and volleyball. There are also laboratories for physiology, biomechanics, psychology, physiotherapy and a fitness suite.
Art & design studios – spacious studios and workshops, with access to technical support and IT and multimedia resources.
Performance & production spaces – include two dedicated TV studios, digital non-linear edit suites, PCS kits, digital imaging equipment and equipment for sound manipulation. There are also facilities available for set design and construction and prop and costume making.
