University of East Anglia

The University of East Anglia (UEA) is an internationally renowned university based in a campus that provides top quality academic, social and cultural facilities to over 13,000 students.

UEA is ranked amongst the top three for student satisfaction according to the first National Student Survey and in the top 20 in the UK by the Sunday Times. It also came top of the most recent research effectiveness league table published by Research Fortnight.

Located in 320 acres of rolling parkland but just two miles from the centre of the cathedral city of Norwich the University is adjacent to the Norwich Research Park which is home to over 1,000 scientists working in several world ranked institutions.

Sporting facilities on campus include the University Sportspark which houses an Olympic sized swimming pool and regularly hosts international sporting events. UEA also has the world famous Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and hosts an International Literary Festival which has included famous names such as Ian McEwan and Kazuo Ishiguro (both alumni of UEA’s Creative Writing course).

10 Reasons to choose UEA
1
Satisfied students
The latest (2010) National Student Survey placed us joint third among mainstream English universities for student satisfaction. We are also top in the UK for accommodation and Students’ Union and best in England overall, according to the 2009 WhatUni.com awards. We came third for facilities and third overall in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2011, and the most recent (2011) Guardian university league table placed us in the top 20 UK institutions.

2 Prize-winning staff and students
Three of our graduates – Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro and Anne Enright – have won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction.  Alumnus Sir Paul Nurse won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2001 and over 20 of our environmental scientists shared with Al Gore the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. UEA contributed more than any other university to the  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Our School of International Development and its innovative commercial arm have been awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education.

3 World-class research
Nearly 90 per cent of our research was rated of international excellence in the latest (2008) Research Assessment Exercise, with over 50 per cent ‘world leading’. Norwich has the fourth greatest concentration of ‘most highly cited researchers’ in the UK, after London, Oxford and Cambridge – thanks to the University and its Norwich Research Park partners. In a survey of top institutions researching geosciences over the last decade, the University of East Anglia was the third university in the world, just after Harvard and Princeton. (Thomson Reuters Essential Science Indicators 2009)

4 Innovation
We have a reputation for innovative courses: our pioneering Environmental Sciences and International Development Schools bring together experts from a number of fields to work collaboratively; we offered the first Creative Writing degree in the UK and our recently introduced MBA in Strategic Carbon Management is a world first.

5 Gigs
The Independent says our Student Union gig roster is “like pop music’s roll of honour, with the biggest names performing each year and other students’ unions wondering how on earth they manage it”.

6 Literature and lectures
We attract some of the world’s most famous writers to two International Literary Festivals every year, as well as hosting leading experts from many fields giving major public lecture series on a wide range of topics.

7 Visual arts
We are home to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, described by the Times University Guide as “perhaps the greatest resource of its type on any university campus”. The collection combines works from famous western artists with fine and applied arts from around the globe – all in an iconic building.

8 Sport
We top the Independent and Complete University Guide 2008 league table for sports facilities. Our Sportspark is the biggest indoor sports centre in Britain and has an Olympic-sized pool, climbing wall, athletics track, gym and an extensive range of sports and leisure activities.

9 Architecture
Our stunning campus, just 15 minutes from the centre of Norwich, has won over 20 awards for architecture. First-year undergraduates from outside Norwich are guaranteed one of our 3,500 campus bedrooms, (many ensuite) if you apply promptly. The Architects’ Journalhas voted our orginal residences – the ziggurats – in the top ten examples of university architecture in the country.

10 A fine city
The fine city of Norwich (“None finer”, according to Stephen Fry) combines heritage charm with 21st century attitude and is rated as one of the top ten shopping venues in the UK. And national crime statistics published in June 2009 show Norfolk to be the safest county in England.

University of Brunel.

Brunel is a campus-based university, and students on site are never more than 10 minutes away from halls of residence, catering, social and sports facilities, lecture theatres, the Library, the Computer Centre or welfare services.

We have invested £300 million redeveloping the campus in the last few years, with many new and refurbished social, teaching and sporting facilities, and more green spaces outside.

The 2011 Brunel International Scholarships are now open

Scholarship detailsBrunel are pleased to announce over £100,000 worth of scholarship funding for International students applying for 2011 entry. There are over 40 awards available this year. Applications for the scholarships can be made online via this website.

Knowledge transfer with business is a major underpinning activity at Brunel that supports and strengthens the main activities of research and teaching. Brunel is committed to strengthening ties with business through the formation of partnerships with selected companies.

The University has an excellent record in developing successful and beneficial relationships with business and industry, locally, nationally and internationally, through:

Collaborative Research and Development
Consultancy and Research and Development Services
Continuing Professional Development
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

Brunel has stood by the words of its Royal Charter – to pursue “research and enterprise for the benefit of individual and society” – since the University’s birth in 1966.

Our reputation has been built on groundbreaking work in subjects ranging from engineering to education, science to IT, psychology to law, sociology to business. That reputation has steadily embraced new areas – the performing arts, journalism, environmental science, sport and health – and these too retain that same outward-looking philosophy.

Brunel’s research therefore continues both to increase our understanding of the world about us and also to produce truly life-saving solutions.
